How to Be Limitless

How to Be Limitless

In the 2011 movie, Limitless, Bradley Cooper plays an average guy who can access his entire brain with the help of a pill.  To date, I have not heard of or seen such a magical pill in real life, however, what if there was a back door to this type of capability… and accessing a higher functioning brain?

The Million Dollar Question

When I meet with clients that I coach, one of my first questions to them is, “Do you meditate?”

All of us have heard of the benefits of meditation for years and still so many of us choose not to partake in the activity as if it were a quaint hobby done by yoga teachers or priests.  Certainly not for us busy people.

I have, like so many others, adopted any one of a thousand excuses to not meditate.  In fact, I wrote about several of those excuses in one of my previous blogs:  My Challenges with the Simplest Form of Stress Relief.

Over time, my ability to meditate has gotten easier but I have struggled with adopting a regular meditation habit.  However, recently I read something that took my understanding to a new level and has re-inspired me to continue this practice with fervor!

What is Coherence?

In his book, Mind to Matter, Dawson Church writes, “This characteristic of coherence makes lasers extraordinarily powerful. Light from a 60-watt incandescent light bulb can faintly illuminate objects two to four yards or meters away…. Organize that same 60 watts of light into a coherent laser, however, and it can cut through steel. Coherent versus noncoherent light… Mental coherence is similar. When our brain waves are coherent, the quality of thought they produce is focused and efficient. We can turn our attention to problems, focus on them, and solve them.”

Having that focus and extreme efficiency where a light bulb can become a laser is a powerful analogy.  In his book, Church writes that achieving such brain coherence can be achieved by (you guessed it) a regular meditation practice:

“But when we slow ourselves down into a meditative state, with a broad alpha bridge connecting our conscious minds to high-amplitude theta and delta waves, we access the power of coherent mind. In this state, our intentions affect matter.”

Why Does It Matter?

Scientists have been able to systematically measure the brain’s coherence via an EEG (an electroencephalogram that detects and measures electrical activity in the brain by attaching electrodes to your scalp). This type of coherence has been known to be directly related to rising intelligence, clarity, creativity, and the overall improvement of the entire functioning brain.

It’s our own version of being Limitless.  All we have to do is meditate.

Church recommends meditating right after waking up in the morning and before doing anything else.  This type of practice offers much more than just stress relief. Additionally, coherence sets the stage for intentionality.

Once we are in that high functioning mode, we can further our supercharged experience by using our intentions, and collectively drive our energy and efforts to move in a certain direction.    It allows for our mind to truly open up any and all possibilities to achieve our goals.

We all know that meditation is part of a healthy regimen that includes personal care, exercise, and eating well.  But even more so, meditation is the key to improving the overall functionality of our brain by allowing it to work at its most efficient levels.  That alone is certainly worth a renewed effort.
