Last night, as we prepared a new recipe for dinner, my 13 year old son said,“I don’t like it…I don’t want to eat it.” Now, this was even before the first morsel touched his lips. Like any good raconteur, I proceeded to remind him of the famous Dr. Seuss story, Green Eggs and Ham, and asked him if he remembered the ending. The shrug of the shoulders was the most response I was apt to get but in such cases, I prefer the silence to the debate.
As dinner was served, he ventured cautiously into his first few bites, but promptly replied, “I do…I do like green eggs and ham!” with exuberance that even Dr. Seuss would be proud of! His one gingerly step led to an unexpected joy.
This story reminds me of so many folks that I interact with who tell me, “they can’t really meditate,” or that, “it’s really not for them.” And the reality is…like my son, they haven’t even taken the first bite.
I dare you. Try it. And you’ll soon discover that you too indeed “like green eggs and ham.” So, thanks for that Dr. Seuss.
And to make it a bit easier to try….try the app Headspace. Andy does a great job walking you through the process of meditation so you too can take that first cautious step!
