The Stress of a Vacation

Why is it that upcoming vacations make us all so stressed out?  Is it me or do you too worry about whether your flights are correctly booked, whether your hotel will be okay, whether you’ll like the food, or whether you’ll have fun.  Do you worry that your house will stay safe, that your pet will be well taken care of, or your camera will have enough memory for this trip (or do you need to take your laptop and cable too?).

It’s like we fill our minds with all kinds of senseless things.  And sometimes more if you are like me….(a woman) in which case, as my husband likes to say, I like to make work for myself.  I thrive on creating lists and crossing things off.  Sometimes I even use red pen to make things stand out!  Neurotic?  Probably.  Psychotic?  Not likely.  Just your average type A….now having to “vacation.”

How do we stop our vacations from being so stressful?  Here’s a thought…..let it go.  Do your best and leave the rest to chance.  If the hotel sucks, I’m sure it can be changed.  If the food sucks, there are always more restaurants to try.  But…if your attitude sucks….you are in big trouble. So, my best advice (to myself) is…more than anything, remember just to have fun.  Whatever it is, don’t let it bring you down.  As my dad always says, “we are only as big as the things that bother us.” Strive to be bigger.

  1. My goal is to make “vacation me” something I live, not something I “go to”. Thanks Roopal! You’re words are inspiring!
